About The Gunjur Project Lodge
Family-founded, community-focused
Gunjur Project was established over 20 years ago through a unique partnership between a British family with backgrounds in health and social care, and a Gambian community leader from Gunjur. Together, Jo and Butch, Jenny and Brendan, and Alagi envisioned a place where cultural exchange and community development would go hand in hand.
Originally created as a programme for UK students to learn about Gambian culture, the project began as a platform for mutual exchange—where young people could learn about global citizenship, share dreams and aspirations, and contribute to grassroots community projects. Their fundraising efforts directly supported local initiatives, making the experience rewarding for both visitors and host communities.
As interest grew, so did the project’s reach. What started as a student-based exchange evolved to welcome families, friends, couples, professionals, and solo travellers. Today, the Gunjur Project offers tailored experiences for anyone eager to discover The Gambia, connect with its people, and get involved in community actions. These packages combine cultural immersion with volunteering opportunities, workshops, and sightseeing trips.
We are proud to host regular groups from the UK, Holland, Belgium, and America, as well as visitors from all over the globe who come to experience the warmth of Gambian hospitality and support our ongoing community work.

Meet the Founders
Jo, Butch, Jenny, Brendan, and Alagi are the founding team behind the Gunjur Project. Their long-standing friendship and shared commitment to community empowerment form the heart of the initiative.
Now a close-knit family operation, the project is proudly supported by the next generation, Charles Alagi Ringstead, son of Jenny and Brendan, who was born in Gunjur in 2009 and is growing up as part of the vision his family helped build.
Whether it's hosting guests, developing programmes, or guiding community support efforts, the team brings decades of combined experience and dedication. The project is supported by a well-trained local staff who uphold high standards of hospitality, care, and professionalism.

Absolutely wonderful time at the Project
Jenny Brendan Jo Butch Charlie and Lilly the dog made me feel more a member of the family than a guest. The staff were all amazing and friendly and always ready with a smile and a hello at any time of the day.
Totally spoilt with a wonderful choice of fresh food for every meal and the ice cold Jule Brew was a welcome relief from the heat. Evening entertainment provided was great Want to re-visit at some point
